"There is a remarkable amount of information between these covers, and what makes the detail here all the more astonishing is its essentially unauthorized nature. When Lewisohn wrote Recording Sessions, he did so with EMI's cooperation and patronage: the company had commissioned him to undertake the dual project of compiling a catalogue of its Beatles holdings for its own use, and to produce a book for collectors and fans. Madinger and Easter worked entirely on their own, and surveyed a field that is both much larger - that is, 30 years work by four musicians, as opposed to eight years work by a single group - and more widely strewn than the Beatles' recordings. Neither Apple nor any of the individual former-Beatles opened their archives to them, either to hear tapes or to survey paperwork."
